LOCAL MP JOINS NEW PARLIAMENTARY GROUP FOR VETERANS12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 22nd Jul 2008 Local MP and Acting Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Michael Moore, has joined a new All Party Parliamentary Group for Veterans. The Group will consider all issues affecting former servicemen and women, and will work to enhance support for veterans and their families. It will focus on the importance of veterans, young and old, to our communities and way of life. Mr Moore has worked closely with the Veterans Agency and with local organisations such as the Royal British Legion and ex-Servicemen's Clubs in promoting the rights and needs of veterans. He is working to help every veteran in the Borders receive their Veterans Badge, and has so far helped more than 340 men and women to receive their award. Mr Moore has also been campaigning in support of the Royal British Legion's 'Honour the Covenant' campaign, which seeks to ensure that the men and women who put themselves at risk for the country are rewarded with the proper duty of care that they, and their families, deserve. Speaking after he joined the group, Mr Moore said: "I think it is an excellent idea to establish this group and I am delighted to be able to be a part of it. I believe it is hugely important that Parliament considers issues affecting the welfare of veterans. We also need to make sure that the profile of veterans continues to be raised and that their sacrifices and contributions are suitably recognised. I look forward to working with other members of the group in helping to achieve these aims."
