HUME CONDEMNS POST OFFICE PLANS

6.53.49am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 21st Aug 2008

Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has this week condemned the Post Office for its planned closures of Post Office branches throughout the South of Scotland.

Jim Hume said:

Post offices provide a vital lifeline service to some of the most vulnerable people in society. Liberal Democrats will continue the campaign to save as many Post Office branches as possible.

"The UK Government has already closed 4,000 Post Offices on top of the 3,500 closed under the Conservatives.

"Ministers and Post Office officials argue that certain post offices are financially unsustainable - this overlooks the community role played by local branches.

The MSP continued:

"I would urge everyone to write to the Royal Mail's consultation which ends in six weeks' time.

"I would also very much welcome letters and emails from constituents on this issue."
