MOORE AND PURVIS: 'BILL MCLAREN'S LEGACY TO RUGBY AND THE BORDERS WILL LIVE ON'

12.00.00am GMT Tue 19th Jan 2010

Responding to the news that Bill McLaren has died, Borders MP Michael Moore said:

"It is very sad to learn of Mr McLaren's death. His passion for his beloved rugby and his home town were obvious to all and will not be forgotten. In all his roles as rugby commentator, Hawick teacher and citizen, he was a gentleman. He will be sorely missed. Such was his impact on the sporting world and the Borders that there are millions of us who felt we knew him, but our thoughts go out to his family and close friends in particular at this time."

Jeremy Purvis MSP added:

"Bill McLaren's love of rugby was infectious and enthused many generations of rugby followers in Hawick, Scotland and beyond. Few people earn the affection and respect that he did or can hope to leave the legacy that he has given us in the Borders. His commentaries were so well informed and creative that they could enliven any match. His contributions to rugby, Hawick and the Borders will live on for a very long time. My thoughts go out to his family and friends."
